Amanda Knox returned home on Tuesday after being acquitted of murder of the stabbing of a British roommate during her stay in Italy. The Italian courts operate under a different system than in the United States. Their court proceedings have a jury of six and a two judge system. Where in the US the jurors have limited contact with the judge, in Italy the six jurors are free to listen to the influence of the two judges. The Knox case of sexual assault and the stabbing of Meredith Kercher was thrown out after the prosecution collapsed.
Knox spent four years in prison and accrued over a million dollars in lawyer fees over the past year. When Amanda left for Italy she was a junior at the University of Washington. Four years later a lot has changed in her life. Amanda was much more interested in the past four years of her friends and family rather than sharing her previous four years. The years no doubt have put a toll on the girl and the city of Seattle will no doubt give her a warm embrace.
